The Midas touch

With 2001 upon us, it's no wonder that the futuristic glint of metal is peeking out from store racks. Last new year was tinged with silver. In a somewhat warmer approach to 2001, it's gold that's showing up at the malls. Here are some finds that will have you shining head to toe:

Bullet Head: Go all the way, starting with golden tresses. Look for L'Oreal super blond creme lightening kit ($11.69 at Longs) to help you along. If you're the fussy sort, better see a stylist.

Bullet Face: Try Benefit "Jitterbug" eye sparkle, $14; Hard Candy's golden "Latte Lip," $16, with an extra boost of caffeine to keep you partying all night; or Anna Sui's gold "Metallic Eyes" shadow, $20. Sephora gets into the act also with its own line of gold mascara, $5.

Bullet Neck and ears: Among the Rainbow Collection's newest designs is owner Karla Brom's naupaka pendants and earrings. The half-flower design pays homage to the Hawaiian legend of two lovers. Half-inch earrings are $185 in 18K gold. Wear one and give the other to your loved one. Or, choose a dance figure from the SaLia collection, with 10 percent of gross sales benefitting the Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education. These whimsical figures designed by Carrie Nottage Smith dangle from a chain or ear lobe. These start at about $125 in 18K gold.

Bullet Bod: The young can get away with wearing nylon gold foil tops in tank and halter styles, $19 at Wildflowers. The older set may go sedate with gold button-down silk dupioni blouses by Lisbeth, $98 at Tapestries by Hauoli at Ala Moana Center. Matching pants are $70.

For the hip set, a strapless jersey dress, $295, by Maria Blanca Nero has been stopping traffic outside Rafael at Ala Moana. As does the Betsey Johnson gold lace pants, $138, in the same window. Also, across the way at DKNY, there is a backless top of silk and gold, rectangular paillettes, at $168. A DKNY gold leather jacket is $995. Matching pants are $895.

At Neiman Marcus, Kay Unger has a sarong-style, mock-wrap cocktail dress with beaded straps in gold silk charmeuse among other holiday styles. Meet the designer in the Galleria department from noon to 4 p.m. Friday.

Bullet Feet: Nine West has a "Give Gold" campaign going. Try a flower-topped platform for $69, or gladiator-style "Aza" sandals embellished with shiny gold-tone plates, $69.
