Time honor may
be a curse

LET'S hope Time magazine's "Person of the Year" does better than last year's winner. It would be a shame if George W. Bush, Time's man for 2000, fared the same as the '99 winner, Jeff Bezos. Before you say "Who?," non-Internet folks should be advised that Bezos heads up Mug shotAmazon.com. That stock was was trading at 102 a year ago and when I checked yesterday it stood at 19 and counting backwards. If the country reacts to its leader the way Amazon did, we're in for a heap of trouble ... Actually, Time's 1991 "Man of the Year" was "The Two George Bushes," but they weren't referring to "dubya." He wasn't even mentioned in the story which dealt with the then-president both before and after the Iranian crisis. Local angle: A character in the story "Doctor Slaughter" by writer Paul Theroux, who has a home on the North Shore, was quoted in that article ...

PUNAHOU grad Amanda Schull, who went on to dance with Ballet Hawaii and the Hawaii State Ballet, has been getting lots of fan mail and picture requests since starring in "Center Stage," a film about a young ballerina trying to make it in New York. Despite other film offers, Schull is remaining true to her first love and returned to the San Francisco Ballet to be a member of the corps of "Nutcracker" this holiday season. Schull says she might do another film, so long as it doesn't conflict with her ballet schedule. Still a kid at 22, Schull says she'll always have memories of "Center Stage" since it was in her contract to receive a video and DVD of the film ...

A grand wedding

WHEN former Star-Bulletin reporter Alf Pratte left Hawaii nearly 20 years ago, he promised his four sons he'd award them a $1,000 bonus if they ever married someone from Hawaii. None of the boys qualified until September, when youngest son Doran called to announce he'd become engaged and that his fiancee, JoEll Allred, is a Kahuku High grad and a Laie girl. They get married at the LDS Temple in Laie tomorrow and Pratte will be on hand to present him with the $1,000 check. Pratte, who went on to teach journalism in Pennsylvania and at BYU, also wrote a history of the American Society of Newspaper editors. In addition, he wrote a history of the Star-Bulletin for his doctoral dissertation at UH, and says he'd now like to update it ...

CALL it great timing, but no sooner did seven Hawaii lawmakers return from their trek to Brazil to look at that country's mass transit system, than news arrived that TheBus was named "America's Best Transit System" for 2000-01 ... How about a five-minute date, or would that be overdoing it? DeeDee DeSoto of 105.1 is hosting what she calls "the ultimate matchmaking game" for singles. It's a series of five-minute dates at Havana Cabana tomorrow from 7 p.m. on. Where you go after your five minutes is up to you. Even if you don't hook up with someone, they're having 75-cent wine tastings ...

Statehood Recognition Award

THANKS to Bill Coops for pointing out yet another snub to Hawaii from someone not knowing any better. The Elderhostel 2001 Spring Book refers to Florida as "The United States' only tropical state." Hey, what about Hawaii? The book further states that Florida has "the only coral reef systems in the U.S." But I don't want to sound elder-hostile ...
