Kauai man kills
girlfriend, hangs self

POIPU, Kauai -- A 26-year-old woman was stabbed to death yesterday at the restaurant where she worked, apparently by her boyfriend, who hanged himself shortly afterward, Kauai police said.

They did not release the names of either person.

Detectives said they received a call at 1:55 from Keoki's Paradise Restaurant in the Poipu Shopping Mall.

The stabbing occurred in front of customers, workers said.

The woman was taken to Wilcox Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 3 p.m.

Officers searched the area for a man described as the woman's boyfriend, a waiter at a nearby restaurant.

His body was found hanging from a tree at 4:30 p.m.

The murder is the sixth on Kauai this year.

Previously, the island had no killings for two and a half years.
