Election wait
may help Bush

THE subject on just about everyone's mind (and lips) the past few weeks has been the monumental Mug shotmuck-up in Florida concerning the presidency and the Electoral College. One commentator even pooh-poohed the Dec. 12 "drop dead" date for naming electors, given that Hawaii was allowed to switch electors from Nixon to Kennedy in the last days of December back in 1960, after a recount. But the Supreme Court made its decision, and made it confusing enough that even the lawyer/analysts on the networks were left scratching their collective heads. The tortuous wait that preceded yesterday's decision might prove a plus for President-elect George W. Bush. With even Democrats feeling sorry for him after what he went through while waiting for a final outcome, he may get a bit of a break. And as for Al Gore, I can't help ruminating that if he'd just carried his home state of Tennessee, Bush could have had Florida on a platter and still lost in the Electoral College ...

THERE'S going to be a gathering of former Miss USA title winners in February to mark the 50th anniversary of the Miss USA pageant, and organizers thus far have been unable to find Macel Wilson, the Miss Hawaii who won the title in 1962. Anyone knowing her whereabouts can contact Samm Johnson, one of the organizers, at (212) 373-4985 ...

Maintenance Manny

JUST because he holds the new title of Director of Maintenance and Housekeeping at the Honolulu Club, Manny Valladares isn't the perfect choice of someone with whom to pick a beef. In the past, Valladares has been the personal bodyguard for various CEOs and Hollywood stars, and has been in charge of security for casinos on the mainland. Oh yes, he also holds a fifth-degree black belt in karate and owns karate schools in Connecticut and New York City ...

THERE'S speculation that James Kelly, president of Pacific Forum/CSIS, our Honolulu-based think tank, is being considered for Undersecretary of State for East Asian Affairs ... Verizon folks are chuckling that its Americast is showing tonight's Nebraska-UH volleyball game for free on ESPN2, and to watch it on competitor Oceanic Cable, you must subscribe to a premier sports package ...

WE mentioned the Honolulu Boy Choir yesterday, and this is their busiest time of the year, meeting 24 times in the 31 days of December. Annually they "donate" a performance to a single charitable organization at Christmastime. Today they appear with Santa at Palama Settlement's annual Christmas party for over 500 underprivileged boys and girls. The Boy Choir also appears at Gov. and Mrs. Ben Cayetano's holiday open house at Washington Place Saturday night at 7 and 8 p.m. Also appearing will be Melinda Caroll, Breakout and a group with a great name, Kahuku High's Vocal Motion ...

Come into my parlor

IN the past I mentioned how much I enjoyed Michele Henry's Tea at 1024 (Nuuanu Ave.) because I was often the only male in the place. Then Nikki Yasutake informed me that her Aston Waikiki Beachside tea parlor, Winterbourne, invariably served several men each weekend, when the parlor is open. Now the Ladies of Winterbourne, as they call themselves, are opening another tea parlor at the Mission Houses Museum. The parlor will be previewed through the holidays, starting Monday, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and have regular hours and menus beginning Jan. 8, 2001 ...
