A top-level, four-day conference at the East-West Center next month on the changing Asia-Pacific economy and other developments in the region will be available to Hawaii residents at a sharp discount.

The Asia-Pacific executive forum Jan. 16-19, titled "Doing Business in a Changing Asia: A Strategic Vision," will cost Hawaii participants $575 each, a $300 discount of the $875 early booking rate, providing they book by Dec. 26.

For that, they will hear key international experts talk on issues such as changing markets, the surging demand for energy in the developing economies, terrorism and personal security for traveling executives, and changes in individual countries such as Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia and India.

Conference subjects will include U.S. interests in the Asia-Pacific region after the Cold War, shifting trade arrangements in the region, corporate restructuring after the Asian financial crisis, a business agenda for the region, U.S.-Japan relations, U.S.-China relations, and restructuring and changing-market opportunities in China.

A number of Hawaii-based experts will take part, such as Fereidun Fesharaki, an East-West Center senior fellow and an expert on petroleum and other energy sources, who will discuss whether the soaring demand for energy in the new economies of the region can be met.

The terrorism and risk session will be conducted by Myron Fuller, special agent in charge if the FBI in Honolulu.

In addition to the nonprofit East-West Center, sponsors include Frost & Sullivan, a San Francisco-based international consulting firm, and the Pacific Basin Economic Council.
