Athletes of the Week
Ianeta Lei Excelled on the mound and at the plate. She earned two wins, giving up just three hits and an unearned run in 12 innings. She also went 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs against La Pietra and homered in a win over University.
IOLANI SOFTBALL
Skyler Wilson The point guard played strong defense and averaged 16 points a game in the James Alegre Invitational tournament, with a high of 21 against Kamehameha in the semifinals.

Ricky Bauer, Mid-Pacific: Averaged 15 points a game in the Kekaulike Invitational, with a high of 22 against Seabury Hall.Ikaika Francis, Kalaheo: Led all scorers with 26 points in the title game of the Alegre Invitational.
FOOTBALL
Mike Akiu, Kamehameha: Hauled in nine passes for 115 yards for the West in the HUB Goodwill Classic all-star game.Brian Daniels, Mililani: Led all rushers with 179 yards on just 11 carries for the West.
Vince Lemau, Campbell: Threw the game-winning pass late in the fourth quarter, a 26-yard connection with Joshua Tomas of Leilehua.
SOCCER
Charlie Chiswick, Castle: Scored three goals in team's opening-game win over Kaiser.Nadine Manangan and Joelle Sugai, Aiea: Teammates each scored a pair of goals to lead Na Alii to 6-1 win against Radford.
Breland Pedro, Moanalua: Tallied three goals in 5-0 blanking of Kaimuki.
Sarah Takekawa, Kailua: Scored two of team's three goals in win over Roosevelt.
SOFTBALL
Kira Kashiwa, Punahou: Drove in the winning run in bottom of the seventh to beat Sacred Hearts and earn the win.Jamie Reyes, Kaimuki: Pitched a 5-inning no-hitter against Kalaheo and also went the distance for a win against Kaiser.
Leo Sing Chow, Kamehameha: Picked up two wins in the season's first week, tossing 10 scoreless innings, giving up just two hits, striking out 15 and walking none.
Kristy Titcomb, Nanakuli: Powered Golden Hawks with a triple, double and single and three RBIs against Waipahu.
Participation in high school sports nationwide is at an all-time high, according to a survey by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Now You Know

During the 1999-2000 school year, 6,556,912 students played sports, an increase of more than 52,000 from the previous year.
It marked the 11th consecutive year the number of participants increased.

Maryknoll knocked off Radford, 58-48, in the finals of the Farrington Invitational basketball tournament behind the play of 6-foot-7 center Francis Fletcher. Back in the Day
TWENTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK
In a semifinal win over Kamehameha -- which was led by multisport star Pono Ma'a -- Fletcher scored 10 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, blocked three shots and had four steals. Against the Rams, he scored 12 points.
The Spartans, coached by Tony Sellitto, also got big production from guard Ricky Leong and forward Kelan McGuire.
Maryknoll ended up losing to Punahou, 41-40, in the state tournament championship game that season.
