From Russia, About 10 minutes before 22,903 Honolulu Marathon runners bolted in darkness to the concussion of a howitzer and the crack of aerial fireworks, Lyubov Morgunova tried to call her husband on a cellular phone.

Honolulu Marathon women's record;
Muindi wins men's, againHonolulu Marathon Results

Star-BulletinHe was back home, across two oceans and two continents, in the couple's modest Moscow flat.
It might have seemed an odd thing for a contender in the strongest women's field ever assembled in the race to do so close to the gun.
But Morgunova, whose first name means "love" in Russian, just felt like she needed to talk to the love of her life, Alexander Morgunov, at that moment.
"It was 13 hours ahead in Moscow and he wasn't home when she called, so Lyubov was disappointed and upset," said her agent and interpreter, Constantine Selenivich.
"I said, 'Don't worry about it! He'll call.' And he called me 15 minutes after the race began and then every 20 minutes, and I told him what was happening from the radio (KGU)."What was happening was Alexander's wife was earning in one morning about 20 times more than the average Russian worker makes in a year: $40,000.
It was for a feat few ever thought could be accomplished in the Honolulu Marathon with its subtropic humidity, headwinds, crosswinds and Diamond Head heartbreaker.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I expect this," said race director Jon Cross after Morgunova not only smashed Carla Beurskens' 14-year-old course record but also became the first women to ever break 2 hours and 30 minutes in a Hawaii marathon with a stunning 2:28:33 victory.
She was 12th overall in the field.
For her win she received $15,000, plus $25,000 more in bonuses for setting the course record and matching various time incentives never before approached on one of the world's more ponderous courses.
"She said she will make repairs in the apartment and maybe get a better car," Selenivich said.
"I can't say I'm totally surprised," said Honolulu Marathon Association president Jim Barahal, who earlier had huddled with agents and coaches for the elite women to discuss a strategy for a fast race led by a designated woman pace-setter.
"With the field we had and the fact there was no wind Saturday, I said let's shoot for 2:28:00," Barahal said.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Muindi of Kenya also collected a $15,000 first prize with his second consecutive win in the men's race. He led the race's 22,649 finishers in a time of 2:15:19.
The finishing figure (of 26,465 original entries) makes Honolulu the sixth largest marathon in the world this year.
"The weather was very good, no wind, just a little bit humid," said Muindi, who was running in his eighth Honolulu Marathon.
Unlike the closest men's finishes of 1998 and 1999, Muindi dropped his nearest rival, fellow Kenyan Philip Taurus, at mile 22.
The top four finishers were Kenyans, with Eliud Kering 17 seconds behind as runner-up.
Barahal was pleased for Muindi but disappointed that the men didn't take advantage of the cool conditions yesterday.
"When the first mile went out at 5:14, Jimmy Muindi realized it was too slow, so he picked it up," Barahal said. "But I don't think he really wanted to run 26 miles by himself so he was forced to let people catch up and they never got a fast enough rhythm going."Even Beurskens was stunned by Morgunova's time.
"I knew that if all those women ran together they could break it, but I thought maybe 2:30:00," said Beurskens, referring to the richly credentialed elite women's field assembled for the history-making race. "I am surprised at 2:28:00."
The 48-year-old Dutch woman, who was given bib No. 8 for her eight Honolulu victories, dropped out after mile 20 with stomach problems.
Seven contenders had personal bests of 2:29 or better and four had clocked 2:26 or better this year.
Catapulting from the torrid pace set by Italy's Franca Fiacconi through mile 17, Morgunova led three women under the old record.
Svetlana Zakharova, the 1997 Honolulu champion from Russia, was second (for the fourth time in five years) in 2:28:51, and Fiacconi was third in 2:30:19.
On any other course, Morgunova's time would've been considered very good.
But on this course it was nothing short of extraordinary.
"If the conditions were cooler, I think she could have run maybe four minutes under the record," Selenivich.
That resurrected a long dormant question: How much can the men's and women's Honolulu records be lowered?
Muindi did not come close to the men's course mark (2:11:43), also set 14 years ago, by Ibrahim Hussein.
Fiacconi said back pain she attributed to her Thursday flight from Rome to Honolulu hindered her when Morgunova made her big move at mile 17, just after the intersection of Hawaii Kai Drive and Kalanianaole Highway.
She said that she'd like to return for next year's race but will arrive much earlier, citing jet lag and acclimation.
It was Fiacconi who forced the fast early pace after designated pace-setter, Irina Suvorova of Russia, never appeared at the head of the field. Suvorova explained that she was stepped on by a male runner at the start and could not recover to fulfill her assignment.
With her powerful stride and long blonde hair flowing from a headband, Fiacconi caught the fascination of onlookers as she led the way into sunrise in Hawaii Kai.
But the toll of having run two marathons (Berlin and New York City) in the 2-hour, 26-minute range in the past three months seemed to keep Fiacconi from making a clean break.
Morgunova made a little surge past Fiacconi before mile 15 at Kuliouou Road.
As they completed the loop in Hawaii Kai and re-entered Kalanianaole Highway, Fiacconi suddenly fell behind all three Russians as Morgunova took over. With mile bursts of 5:24 and 5:27, the 5-foot-10, 110-pound auburn-haired leader built a safe lead by mile 19 at West Hind Drive.
