Photographs often are the best way to show dramatic changes in Hawaii, providing an easy update on landmarks, persons and events. At other times, however, photos showing minimal changes during the years remind us that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Look for examples of big and little changes every Monday in "It's about time," which will inform, update and prod a few memories.
On Sunday, Dec. 16, 1973, 167 runners lined up at Aloha Tower in the first Honolulu Marathon. Less than 2 hours later, Hawaii's own Duncan Macdonald, then a 24-year-old medical student, crossed the finish line first (2:27:34) at Kapiolani Park. About an hour later, in a time of 3:25:31, 14-year-old June Chun, also home-grown, became the first woman to finish the 26.2-mile race -- 47th overall. She was one of seven family members -- known as the "Hunky Bunch" -- who ran that year. In all, 151 runners finished that historic race.Macdonald went on to win two more marathons, including 1980, above. Over the years, the Honolulu Marathon has grown into one of the world's largest races. In 1995, it surpassed the New York Marathon as the world's largest, with 27,022 runners crossing the finish line -- still the Honolulu Marathon record. Yesterday was the 28th annual Honolulu Marathon, with runners lining up at Ala Moana/Queen Street in the early morning hours.
