College recruiters, take note. Daniels leads

Special to the Star-BulletinMililani's Brian Daniels rushed for 178 yards to lead the West all-stars over the East, 22-18, last night before 2,267 people at Aloha Stadium in the annual Hawaii Union Builders Foundation Goodwill Football Classic for high school seniors.
A 26-yard pass from Campbell's Vince Lemau to Leilehua's Joshua Tomas with 2:50 left in the game gave the West its first victory over the East ever. In the nine years previous of this event, the West had lost seven and tied two games with the East.
"The kids really wanted to win," said winning head coach Kale Ane of Punahou. "With Kahuku beating St. Louis (last week for the state championship, ending a 15-year reign), I think they felt like it was time for them to finish the streak."
Many of this season's best players did not participate in the game because they were either on recruiting trips or involved in other sports or activities.
But that just gave other players, like Daniels, a chance to shine.
He amassed his 178 yards on just 11 carries, and scored two touchdowns in a performance that earned him the West's offensive MVP award.
Daniels went 68 yards in the second quarter on his third carry of the game to score the West's first touchdown. And it took him just four carries to go over 100 yards.
His success last night was surprising, but not shocking.
Although he finished third in the OIA Red with 626 yards rushing, he was inconsistent throughout the season, rushing for 279 yards one game and 8 yards the next.
He tied a state record, scoring six touchdowns in one game, but he managed just three more touchdowns for the rest of the regular season.
Still, some coaches say last night's performance was a glimpse at the raw talent he possesses.
"I knew he always had it in him," said Mililani head coach James Millwood, who coached the running backs for the West last night. "It helped that he had an all-star line blocking for him."
But Ane said it didn't matter. "He's a great runner, he makes great adjustments," he said. "We would love to have had him on our team. I think we might have challenged St. Louis with him."
The 6-foot, 215-pound running back has not been offered a scholarship yet, but Millwood wouldn't be surprised if that changes soon.
"He's a very hard worker, with deceptive speed," Millwood said.
Chad Caima of Waipahu was named defensive MVP for the West. Kailua swept the honors for the East, with Josh Uelese claiming the offensive MVP and Ammon Kaleo claiming defensive MVP.

"We had to adjust our style of play. We were rushing too much (in the first half)," Trojans coach Jeff Yamamoto said.
Jarrett Razon scored nine minutes into the game and Blaine Murakami added another goal to give the Trojans a 2-0 halftime lead. Both scored again in the second half, along with Whitney Shimatsu and Wesley Kim.
