Haleakala Park
plans strict rules
enforcement
during holidays

Star-Bulletin staff

Regulations at the Haleakala National Park will be enforced during the New Year's weekend.

A park-wide ban on the possession or consumption of alcohol will be in effect from Dec. 29 through Jan. 1 at the park.

Use or possession of fireworks of any kind is prohibited at the Haleakala National Park year-round.

Park rangers will hold alcohol checkpoints in the Summit Area on Dec. 31.

To protect fragile native ecosystems while many people are visiting the park, parking lots will be closed when they are full and rangers will direct visitors to alternate parking lots.

All campgrounds and campsites in Haleakala National Park will be open over the holiday weekend with normal camping regulations in effect.

The maximum individual group size for all camping facilities is 12 people. From Dec. 29 through Dec. 31, Kipahulu area park rangers will issue camping permits to visitors at the campground entrance.

Permits are required for the backcountry campsites at Holua and Paliku. Visitors may obtain free permits in person at the Park Headquarters Visitor Center from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis the day they plan to enter the backcountry.

Permits for use of wilderness cabins during the holiday weekend have already been issued to cabin lottery winners.

To fill possible cancellations, visitors may call the Park Headquarters Visitor Center at 572-4459 from 1 to 3 p.m.

For more information on camping or cabin permits and regulations, visitors may call 572-4400 or check the park Web site at www.nps.gov/hale.
