Lanakila Meals on Wheels
needs volunteers, donations

Lanakila Rehabilitation Center's Meals on Wheels is gearing up for the Christmas season to provide holiday meals to more than 1,000 homebound seniors island-wide.

Although the program receives state and federal funding for its regular weekday deliveries, it must rely on donations for non-funded holiday deliveries.

A nutritious holiday meal with the fixings costs $4.75. Donated dollars to the Lanakila "Adopt a Senior" program are the key.

The Vietnam Veterans Street Bikers Association is an "adopting" group. They also will deliver meals to seniors starting at 9:30 a.m. Christmas Day.

The 25-year-old Lanakila Meals on Wheels normally provides meals to more than 1,750 Oahu residents, age 60 or older.

For more information, or to volunteer as a deliverer, call 531-0555.

Project begins to control
storm damage at ag park

State workers from the Department of Land and Natural Resources began construction on sediment basins to minimize storm damage at the Waianae Agricultural Park.

The project will provide protection to agricultural park lots during storms by controlling erosion and diverting runoff. Basins will collect sediment and prevent storm runoff similar to that experienced in 1996.

Funds were delegated from the Department of Agriculture to the Department of Land and Natural Resources for bidding and construction management. A $646,670 contract was awarded to Mega Construction, Inc.

The project is expected to be completed by August 2001.

Chemicals in drug arrest close part of Lihue motel

Kauai police closed off a portion of a restaurant/motel and its parking lot in Lihue yesterday after hazardous chemicals were found in a car during a drug arrest.

A police officer was overwhelmed by the chemicals at the Tip Top Motel Cafe and Bakery and taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, said fire Battalion Chief Ernest Moniz. The officer was "OK," Moniz said.

Moniz said there were some chemicals in a motel room, as well.

The fire department was called about 3:30 p.m. and had the incident under control at about 6 p.m. yesterday.

"Once we contained the thing, then there was no problem," Moniz said.

A company from Honolulu was called in to remove the chemicals.

Moniz said he didn't know what kind of drugs were involved in the arrest but fire officials did detect a chemical acid and acetone. Acetone is used in making methamphetamine.

Police officers at the scene this morning declined to comment on the details of the case.

"Everything's still pending further investigation," officer Paddy Ramson said.
