Defending champ Iolani
opens with victory

Ianeta Lei keyed an eight-run second inning and pitched a one-hitter as defending state champion Iolani began its Interscholastic League of Honolulu softball season with a 19-0 victory over visiting La Pietra yesterday.

Lei, the state's Offensive Player of the Year last season, drilled a two-run double and six teammates also reached safely as the Raiders quickly put the game out of reach.

Claire Haranda doubled in the fourth inning for La Pietra.

"For a first game, our team came out very focused and carried that intensity throughout," Iolani coach Chris Shimabukuro said.

kamehameha 1, university 0: At University, Leo Sing Chow tossed a two-hitter, striking out 11 without a walk, and Courtney Cho singled with two outs in the fifth to lead the Warriors.

"This was a good defensive battle," Kamehameha coach Ty Sing Chow said. "They're a scrappy team."

punahou 5, Mid-pacific 1: At Punahou, Kiralyn Kashiwa fired a two-hitter and struck out nine to lead the Buffanblu.

Sacred hearts 5, hBA/st. andrew's 3: Amber Juan threw a complete game and went 2-for-4 at the plate and Justina Welch knocked in a pair of runs for the host Lancers.

Campbell 3, Aiea 1: At Campbell, Grace Botoanes scored the winning on a two-out single to left by Jalen Garcia in the sixth.

Winning pitcher Jenna Sylva scattered three hits, striking out six.

Mililani 2, Waianae 1: At Waianae, the Trojans scored both of their runs on a wild pitch in the top of the third.

Farrington 4, McKinley 2: At Joey DeSa Field, the Governors used two hits, a hit batsman and two errors to score all four of their runs in the fourth.

kaimuki 10, kaiser 0: At Kaiser, Jamie Reyes struck out 13 in a complete game and Tyleen Tausaga and Noelani Tamanaha each rapped three hits for the Bulldogs.

nanakuli 9, waipahu 7: Kristy Titcomb knocked a single, double and triple and three RBIs and Lehua Yap pitched three-plus innings of effective relief to earn the win for the host Golden Hawks.

kalani 18, kalaheo 5: Robin Okawa smacked a home run and a double as the host Falcons pounded the Knights.

Megan Watson hit a two-run homer for Kalaheo.

castle 5, kahuku 0: Shana Silva allowed just one hit, a leadoff single in the third. She struck out four and walked two.

The Knights scored three in the fifth with the help of Cheri Defiesta's RBI triple and Lia Pedrina's run-scoring single.

pearl city 13, radford 2: Loihi McKeague pitched a complete game and ripped two doubles for the visiting Chargers.

IN OTHER GAMES: Kailua beat Roosevelt, 2-0, and Leilehua blanked Waialua, 10-0.
