Mary Bea Porter-King of Kauai has been awarded the 2000 Budget Service Award by the LPGA for her efforts in promoting junior golf in Hawaii.

"I am so honored to receive this award and to be recognized in my profession," said Porter-King, an LPGA member since 1973.

President of the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association since its inception two years ago, she recently was named as one of three new members to the USGA executive committee.

Wahine swim fastest 200

The University of Hawaii women won the 200 freestyle relay in 1 minute, 32.69 seconds - a school record and the fastest recorded time in the nation this season - during the Speedo Cup swimming meet at Irvine, Calif., last weekend.

Sarah Simonsen, Lori Thomas, Sara Watchorn and Renate Du Plessis made up the winning UH foursome.

The UH men and women have posted 17 NCAA qualifying times and are unbeaten in dual meets.

Lehman, Singh, Jones in

Tom Lehman and Vijay Singh, who played in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf won by Tiger Woods last month, were named to the Johnny Bellinger Shoot-Out along with Steve Jones. All have won majors.

Already committed to the shoot-out field are defending Sony Open champion Paul Azinger, Scott Simpson, John Daly, Peter Jacobsen and Billy Andrade.

The six-hole event will be held Jan. 16 at the Waialae Country Club during the week of the $4 million Sony Open.

Rip Curl surfing continues

Perfect conditions and challenging waves greeted the Rip Curl Cup competitors at Sunset Beach yesterday.

Among those advancing through Round 3 were 2000 world champion Sunny Garcia, defending champion Zane Harrison of Australia and Hawaii's Derek Ho, the oldest competitor in the event at 36.

Also advancing were Hawaii's Ross Williams, Liam McNamara and Kalani Robb.
