Star-BulletinDemian McGuire pleaded no contest to the reduced charge under a plea agreement reached in September, nearly seven years after Dinh Van Vo was found dead in his Kapiolani Manor apartment.
Vo, 51, an unemployed hairdresser, was found strangled Sept. 6, 1993.
McGuire was indicted on a second-degree murder charge in 1996 after a three-year investigation that centered on a jail-house confession by another inmate.
McGuire, when arrested, told police he strangled the transvestite after watching a pornographic video showing strangulation scenes.
At least two and possibly three suspected accomplices were questioned, but no charges were filed against them.
"Based on the facts and circumstances of the case and that others may have been involved, we felt it was most prudent to dispose of (the case) in this fashion," said Deputy Prosecutor Franklin Pacarro Jr.
