Call out to help
‘Bobo’ Ciacci

IT was a dozen years ago that the Halekulani's Joyce Matsumoto was in Korea helping to open the Seoul Inter-Continental. While there, she received a fax of a baby's footprint sent by the parents, Lane & Nancy Ciacci, who then asked her to be the baby's godmother. The Ciacci family has maintained a special place in the heart of godmother Matsumoto, and it's with a heart-sick sadnessMug shot that she's asking everyone to help Lane get a bone marrow transplant as he battles leukemia. "Bobo" Ciacci, a former UH Rainbow Warrior tight end ('72), had tests run of his five siblings and all proved negative, hence the appeal to the public. As Matsumoto puts it, Jennifer Ciacci (whose footprint she still saves) doesn't want a PlayStation or anything else a 12-year-old Maui girl might desire this Christmas. She only wants it possible to celebrate the holidays with her mom and dad. You can become a volunteer donor Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Daiei Waipahu Food Court, or Sunday at Punahou School's Dole Cafeteria from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 547-6154. Who knows, you may be just the one to bring a smile to the face of a healthy 12-year-old by giving her father a second chance at life ...

AT the Rainbows Na Koa football banquet at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, ex-No. 1 quarterback Nick Rolovich got a laugh when he referred to emcee Jim Leahey as a "walking Thesaurus." ... Shep Gordon flew in from Maui to take in the Brickwood Galuteria quartet Friday night at Don Ho's Island Grill. He sat with none other than Don Ho himself ... Beverly Gannon catered the blessing of the new Tiffany's in Wailea last Friday. She felt it only appropriate to become the store's first customer, buying an Elsa Peretti starfish ...

August in December

YESTERDAY'S column mentioned that August Busch IV of Anheuser-Busch Inc., and the great grandson of the founder of Budweiser, was in town last week. He and two local A-B honchos toured all of the Bud warehouses in the islands, in Lahaina, Kauai, Kona and Hilo. It's easy enough to do in one day if you have a private jet, as Busch does. And since he has his own license, he did the flying. At 36, Busch is single, never been married and the future head man at Budweiser (form a double line, ladies). What kind of guy is he? An assistant tells how at 7 a.m. one Sunday morning, he got a call from Busch asking if he'd like to attend the St. Louis Rams-Oakland Raiders game. Never mind that the game was in Oakland -- off they headed in a private jet, watched the first half blowout, then headed back and were in St. Louis before the game ended. Local Anheuser-Busch Sales President Damien Bonenfont was thrilled that the boss gave him great marks, but admits the pressure's still on. Chairman August Busch III is coming in Christmas Day for a few weeks ...

Old Timer's disease

IT began 13 years ago when Ted Sturdivant began an "Old Timer's" get-together for longtime media friends, still large despite the ever expanding obituary lists. For years he used to include those no longer with us as "Gone But Not Forgotten." This year's party is Thursday at Murphy's beginning at 6 p.m., and this year's invite no longer contains the list of deceased. It's doubtless because of his listing of one very much alive fellow as "Gone," and the guy showed up to say, "Hi." Sturdivant was mortified. This year Ted himself won't be there, but only because he's gallivanting through Asia ...
