Aloha Bowls mixBy Paul Arnett
Star-BulletinThis year, the Oahu Bowl will be played on Christmas Eve and features Virginia against No. 24 Georgia. Neither team has ever played in Hawaii.
Arizona State faces Boston College in the Aloha Bowl on Christmas Day. The Eagles knocked off nationally ranked Kansas State, 12-7, in the 1994 game.
It's the second consecutive year for the Sun Devils to be in the Aloha Bowl. They lost to Wake Forest last year in a game that had about 5,000 people in the stands prior to kickoff.
"They didn't play that well last year," chief executive officer Fritz Rohlfing said. "They said they weren't used to competing in an empty stadium and it kind of threw them off. We're very pleased to have them here."
This will be the last game for ASU head coach Bruce Snyder, who was fired earlier this month. He was recently replaced by former Boise State head coach Dirk Koetter, who will coach his team in the upcoming Humanitarian Bowl.
Rohlfing had hoped Oregon State would not be a part of the BCS package, sending top 10 Oregon this way. But the Beavers are in the BCS, and the Ducks are in the Holiday Bowl, opening up a spot in Hawaii's four-team formula.
"And we got a quality team in Georgia," Rohlfing said. "To have four different conferences -- Big East, ACC, Pac-10 and Southeastern -- represented here is great for our games. We're looking forward to the teams arriving here in two weeks."
Kickoff for the Oahu Bowl is set for 3:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. It will be televised by ESPN, but blacked out locally if the games aren't sold out 48 hours before kickoff. The Aloha Bowl is in its normal Christmas Day time slot of 10:30 a.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC-TV.
