Harrison to transfer
to junior college

UNIVERSITY of Hawaii quarterback Mike Harrison is transferring to a junior college in California.

He said after last Saturday's game that he had met with the coaches and he will be leaving the program at the end of the semester.

"You need to talk to him to find out about his plans," Warriors head coach June Jones said after Hawaii's disappointing 34-32 loss to Nevada-Las Vegas. "I don't really want to comment on that."

Harrison, who recently suffered a third-degree ankle sprain in his home, said he would probably attend a junior college in Southern California.

"I've already used up my redshirt year," Harrison said, "so I want to go to someplace like Orange Coast (College ) in the spring, play in the fall and then transfer to a Division I program where I would have two years left.

"This was a good experience for me. But I want to go someplace where I have a chance to play right away."

Harrison entered this season as the only quarterback on the team with Division I experience. As Dan Robinson's backup last year, Harrison completed 9 of 20 passes for 91 yards and no touchdowns. He also scored on a 14-yard run that accounted for most of his career total of 20.

After junior college transfer Jared Flint went down with shoulder problems early on, most figured Harrison to be the No. 1 guy going into fall camp. He eventually lost out to Nick Rolovich, who started the first two games of the season.

Flint and Rolovich will return for their senior seasons. As Rolovich put it after the game: "There's nowhere else I can go."

Walking the line

Avion Weaver and Afatia Thompson took part in the senior walk, but both remain hopeful they can do it all again next season. Both are seeking extra years for different reasons.

Weaver has a redshirt season, but went past the point of no return when he blew out his knee in the fourth game. He is hopeful the WAC will award him with a medical hardship. It's unlikely.

Thompson has a better chance. If he graduates in May, the NCAA could award the partial qualifier an extra year. It's unclear when his NCAA clock actually began, but UH athletic department officials are hopeful.

Injury update

Wide receiver Justin Colbert aggravated an ankle sprain and safety Jacob Espiau did the same to his knee, forcing both players to the sidelines Saturday night.

Running back James Fenderson suffered an ankle sprain in the fourth quarter, but vowed he would be healthy by January should he receive an invitation to the 55th annual Hula Bowl.

Defensive linemen Mike Iosua (ankle) and Brett Clowers (shoulder) didn't play, but offensive tackle Kynan Forney returned to the lineup after missing two games with a bad ankle.

"His ankle was a little stiff," UH offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh said. "But he came in and did a good job. He wanted to play, so we let him."

Bye-bye baseball

Outfielder Nate Jackson said after the game it was doubtful he would play baseball this season.

"It doesn't look like it," Jackson said. "My foot is still bothering me. I need to rest it, so I probably will spend the spring in the weight room getting strong."
