WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- UCLA senior two-meter Sean Kern of Honolulu has been named the MPSF Men's Water Polo Player of the Year, chosen by the league's head coaches and announced by MPSF Executive Director Al Beaird yesterday.

Kern, a 2000 Olympian and former Punahou standout, returned to the Bruins after missing the first eight games of the season to score four goals against USC in his MPSF season debut, earning MPSF Player of the Week honors. Kern's accolades include 1999 NCAA Player of the Year, first ever recipient of the Peter J. Cutino Award and the MVP of the 1999 NCAA championship after scoring four goals to seal the 6-5 win over Stanford.

Kern, who also earned First Team All-MPSF honors for the second straight year, was instrumental in UCLA's MPSF championship tournament run. Kern has scored 29 goals in 15 games, with four assists and 16 steals.

Additionally, Brandon Brooks also of Honolulu and a Punahou graduate, earned second team All-MPSF honors. The sophomore goalkeeper has started and played in all 24 of UCLA's games. He has a 5.06 goals against average and has 32 steals this season.

UCLA looks to win its seventh NCAA title and fourth in six years next weekend at the NCAA Tournament at Pepperdine. The No. 1 seed Bruins take on No. 4 seed Navy on Saturday.
