Cayetano: Gore
should soon concede

Star-Bulletin staff

Calling Texas Gov. George W. Bush the "president-elect," Gov. Ben Cayetano says Vice President Al Gore should concede the election if the Democratic presidential candidate does not win the next round of legal challenges.

Bush declared victory Sunday after Florida's Republican secretary of state, Katherine Harris, certified results showing he won there by 537 votes out of about 6 million cast.

But Gore has filed a series of lawsuits, asking for the votes in three heavily Democratic counties in Florida to be recounted to include 11,000 disputed ballots.

Cayetano, a Democrat who supported Gore, said it is almost over.

"I think legally he has taken his last shot," Cayetano said.

"If the court denies him any kind of relief, he should concede and let President-elect Bush proceed with uniting the country and get on with the business of presiding over the strongest nation in the world," Cayetano said.
