He put up the numbers. Now he can put up a plaque.

University of Hawaii quarterback Tim Chang, who leads the Western Athletic Conference in total offense, was named the WAC's Freshman of the Year. The St. Louis School product is averaging 293.8 yards through nine games this season, sixth-best nationally.

"It's a great honor," Chang said this morning. "Coach (June) Jones gives us a great opportunity to throw the ball here. I just thank him and my teammates for helping me achieve this. Individual honors are nice, but it's still a team game."

The true freshman has completed 219 of 419 passes for 2,688 yards and 18 touchdowns.

"It's nice some of our guys received the individual attention," Jones said. "How well you do in the league determines how many guys you get on the team. Timmy had a good year. So did Kynan. He worked his butt off to become one of the top tackles around."

The senior offensive lineman was named All-WAC first team, the only Warrior selected. Second-team honors went to UH sophomore wide receiver Ashley Lelie, senior running back James Fenderson, and junior defensive backs Jacob Espiau and Nate Jackson.

"I have to thank God and my parents, and especially the coaching staff because they gave me a second chance," Forney said. "Sitting out last year to get healthy was big for me because it gave me time to learn the techniques. Hopefully, this will lead to bigger things for me if I can make it at the next level."
