There be dragons

The Honolulu Zoo will show off its six baby Komodo dragons, the first ever to be bred from adults raised in captivity, at a special event Sunday.

This will be the opening of the permanent exhibit of the little reptiles, which can grow up to 10 feet long as adults. There also will be a naming contest for the six dragons and zoo staff will talk about how the endangered species are bred and raised. The Honolulu Zoological Society will offer adoptions of the baby Komodos.

Visitors may also see other unique reptiles -- Galapagos tortoises, snakes, lizards and giant geckos -- in the zoo's "Cold-Blooded Day" event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is $6 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 13 and free for children 5 and younger. The zoo opens from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Information: 971-7174.
