Construction was to begin Saturday on moorings for recreational and commercial vessels to use while at Molokini shoal for scuba diving and snorkeling.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and contractor Ocean Dynamics will replace floating buoys, attached to the sea floor to help prevent anchor damage to coral reefs.

Molokini, three miles off Maui's southwestern shore, is one of 10 Marine Life Conservation District areas designated as protected, no-fishing space for marine life to grow and reproduce.

Boaters are asked to stay clear of the area while construction is under way.
