WAILUKU -- Two teen-agers have become Maui's 20th and 21st fatalities of the year, compared with 14 at the same time last year.

They died yesterday when their car crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a four-wheel-drive vehicle head-on.

Dead following the crash were the driver, Ryan Praver, 16, of Lahaina, and Trini Schoener, 18, of Wailuku.

The accident took place at about 1:25 p.m. between the Lahaina pali and Olowalu, when the car traveling toward Lahaina tried to overtake several vehicles and struck a 2000 Jeep Renegade, police said.

Schoener died at the scene. Praver died later at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said the driver of the Jeep fractured her right ankle and will require surgery.

Her 12-year-old son had minor injuries and was treated and released from Maui Memorial.

Praver was a student at Lahaina High School.

Police Sgt. Dean Rickard said the accident was being investigated, and police were still determining if speed, alcohol or drugs may have been factors.
