Red Cross relocates Hilo flood aid center

The American Red Cross Family Service Center in Hilo will relocate today to its East Hawaii branch offices at 55 Ululani St. from the Butler Building on the Civic Center grounds. Office hours will continue to be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Big Island flood victims needing disaster aid are urged to visit the service center.

Starting today, calls will be taken at 969-7369 or 934-8994.

To make a donation, call 734-2101 (Oahu) or 935-8305 (Hilo), or send monetary contributions to American Red Cross, East Hawaii Branch, 55 Ululani St., Hilo 96720, or to American Red Cross, Hawaii State Chapter, 4155 Diamond Head Road, Honolulu 96816.

Hawaii tied for third lowest in voter turnout

Hawaii ranked third from the bottom in the nation for the percentage of the voting-age population that cast ballots this year, according to a poll conducted by Newsweek magazine.

Minnesota was first with a 68.7 percent turnout, followed by Maine, Wisconsin and Vermont, according to the Nov. 20 edition of Newsweek.

Arizona ranked at the bottom, with a 36.9 percent turnout, followed by California with 39.4, Hawaii with 40.5, Washington with 40.5, and New Mexico with 41.5 percent.

Army starts demolition of Aliamanu housing

The Department of the Army has authorized funding to demolish the 305 termite-damaged structures at Aliamanu Military Reservation.

Actual demolition is set to begin today. It's Phase 2 of a two-part plan to demolish substandard housing on Army installations here. Phase 1, completed earlier this year, was destruction of 20 housing units at Schofield Barracks and two housing units at Wheeler Army Airfield.

Also, part of Phase 2 will be destruction of about 152 housing units at Schofield after funding is authorized.

Name anti-drug heroes by Friday for awards

Friday is the deadline to nominate unsung heroes for the 2001 Ola Pono Awards, presented annually to recognize efforts to make Hawaii healthy and drug-free. Nominees may be individuals, groups or volunteers working with adults, youth or the general population.

A nomination form must be submitted with a 500-word essay describing the person's contributions. Forms may be obtained by calling the Hawaii Medical Service Association on Oahu, 948-6848, or downloaded from www.hmsa.com.

Sponsors of the program are HMSA; the Department of Education Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program; Kamehameha Schools Native Hawaiian Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program; Drug-Free Hawaii in the Department of the Attorney General; News 8; and Landmark Entertainment.

Police seek suspect in 2 robberies in Waikiki

Police are looking for a man suspected of allegedly pulling off two early-morning robberies today in the Waikiki area.

A taxicab driver reported being held up by a man near the Honolulu Zoo at 4:30 a.m. The suspect, wearing a dark jacket and carrying a handgun, fled on foot on Kapahulu Avenue.

An hour later, a man, also wearing a dark jacket and a scarf hiding his face, robbed the Island Mini-Mart on Kapahulu Avenue. The suspect also used a handgun.

Players eatery and bar suffers small grease fire

Firefighters were called to Players restaurant and bar on University Avenue at 2:10 this morning to extinguish a small grease fire.

There was no serious damage.

Volcano motorcyclist killed in Kona crash

A 52-year-old man from Volcano was killed Saturday night after his motorcycle ran off the road and struck an embankment on Mamalahoa Highway near the 98-mile marker in the Kaohe area of South Kona.

The motorcyclist was heading south when he crossed the center line and ran off the road. The victim was not wearing a helmet and sustained head injuries. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m.

It was the Big Island's 33rd traffic fatality for the year, compared with 28 at the same time last year.

Fire extinguished to free Ace Bail Bonds employee

A fire trapped an employee of Ace Bail Bonds inside the building at 1025 Kaheka St. early yesterday morning.

The man reported hearing banging on the front door about 2:50 a.m. He checked the office and found a fire burning just outside the front door.

The employee was unable to exit, and the rear door was locked.

He called the Fire Department, and the fire set to the front door mat was extinguished.

Structural damage was $1,000, and there was no damage to the contents.

Waianae man arrested after girlfriend incident

A 22-year-old Waianae man was arrested after he tried to stop his 21-year-old girlfriend from leaving their home at about 12:10 a.m. yesterday.

When the suspect allowed the woman to leave, he followed her in his vehicle. He grabbed her and forced her into his vehicle. The woman later reported the incident to police. The man faces possible charges of kidnapping and abuse.

Raw sewage dumped in Big Isle river bed

KOHALA, Hawaii -- Raw sewage was dumped in a river bed yesterday morning in North Kohala on the Big Island.

The Hawaii County Fire Department discovered the sewage in a 10-foot-by-20-foot area in a pond in a half-dried riverbed at about 8:55 a.m. yesterday. The Department of Health is investigating.

Sandy Beach drowning victim is identified

The 27-year-old Honolulu man who drowned off Sandy Beach on Friday has been identified by the medical examiner's office as Ian Pezel.

Pezel was swimming with a friend, who reported the accident at 4:40 a.m.
