Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball coach Tita Ahuna has been named the Tachikara/AVCA Pacific Region Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons.

Ahuna, a former University of Hawaii volleyball star, has led HPU (25-0) to the No. 1 national ranking and its third consecutive NCAA Division II tournament appearance. Her five-year coaching record at HPU is 108-29.

HPU plays Grand Valley State (31-3) in a first-round match next Thursday at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Arizona coach
Tomey resigns

Associated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Dick Tomey ended 14 seasons as head coach at Arizona yesterday by resigning moments after the Wildcats' 30-17 loss to Arizona State.

Tomey, 62, was under considerable pressure after his last two teams went 6-6 and 5-6.

"I just told them (the players) that I didn't think I could continue because the public debate has become so difficult for my family, for our team, for our coaches and their families," Tomey said.

Tomey, 95-64-4 at Arizona, had the longest tenure of any current Pac-10 coach. He was 158-110-7 in 24 seasons at Arizona and Hawaii and has the most victories of any coach at both schools.
