Bazaar opens

The annual Honolulu Academy of Arts World Art Bazaar opens at 10 a.m. Saturday for holiday shoppers.

In addition to holiday ornaments and creches for the home, there will be gift items such as vintage Thai silk ikat sarongs, carved wooden animals from Mexico, copper batik printing blocks from Indonesia, antique Chinese baskets, and more, reflecting the cultures represented in the museum's collections.

The 19th annual event takes place during normal museum hours, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays, through Dec. 23.

No museum admission will be charged for visitors to the World Art Bazaar, Academy Shop or Garden Cafe. Parking will be available at the Academy Art Center at Linekona, for $1 with validation.

Concert cancelled

The Jimmy Borges and Shari Lynn "Great American Songs" concert scheduled for Saturday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Theatre has been cancelled due to a death in Lynn's family.

Refunds are being given at the front desk of the academy, at 900 S. Beretania St. Refunds may also be done by mail. Call 532-8700.

In place of the concert, the Academy Theatre will be screening the Julia Sweeney film, "God Said, Ha!"

Sweeney, an alumnus of "Saturday Night Live," offers a peek into a year in her life after her sick brother moved in with her. Her worried parents also moved in, causing more havoc.

The film is being presented in cooperation with Hospice Hawaii at Home.

Sweet Honey in the Rock returns

Sweet Honey in the Rock returns to Hawaii Dec. 7 to perform at 7:30 p.m. at Leeward Community College Theatre.

The Grammy Award-winning African-American female a capella ensemble combines powerful voices, an array of percussion instruments and uses an American Sign Language interpreter to deliver its compelling message of song.

The group's repertoire is rooted in the rich tradition of the African-American church and freedom songs of the Civil Rights Movement.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students, seniors and active military. Tickets are available at the LCC box office. Call 455-0385 for information.

'Wrap up' a warthog

Give a warthog for Christmas. Or a zebra. Or maybe even a monitor lizard.

Honolulu Zoo offers adoption of some of its animals as a different kind of holiday gift-giving.

Make a donation in the name of someone on your gift list and they will get a certificate, photograph, fact sheet and recognition on the zoo's sponsor post. The gift-giver will be able to take a tax deduction.

Basic adoptions go for $25, keeper for $50 and curator costs $125. The money will be used to feed and care for the selected animal.

Other animals available for adoptions include nene, African lions, ring-tailed lemurs, Indian elephants and Galapagos tortoises. Information: 926-3191.

Dress up the holidays

To celebrate the holidays, Neiman Marcus is welcoming Mike Robinson of Christopher Radko to sign a special edition Jolly Elf Santa ornament from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow in its Christmas Glories Department, First Level.

The company is known for its handmade glass ornaments, sought by collectors each Christmas.

The store also welcomes jewelry designer Akiyo Matsuoka from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday.

Matsuoka will be showing a special Holiday trunk show of pave diamonds, including her signature diamond and 18K gold balls.For more information, call Designer Jewelry at 948-5996.

Then from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, cookbook author James Lambeth will sign copies of his newest book, "A Tuscan Seduction: A Romantic Cookbook for Two" ($34.50).

The cookbook features cuisine that originated almost a half millennium ago, during the Italian Renaissance.
