Junior setter Nia Tuitele, already named the Pacific West Player of the Year, is one of five repeat selections to the 12-player squad. Joining her are teammates senior outside hitter Debbie Sant'Anna, making the team for the second third straight year, and sophomore blocker Susy Garbelotti, earlier named the conference Newcomer of the Year.
No player from defending national champion Brigham Young-Hawaii was selected to the all-region team, including three-time first team All-American Vanessa Valansi.
HPU (25-0) will leave Monday for the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Sea Warriors will face No. 11 Grand Valley State (31-3) in the tournament opener next Thursday.
4 earn football honors
Four former Roosevelt High football players, now playing for Santa Ana College, earned all-Mission Conference honors yesterday.Named to the first team were defensive tackle Elia Tauala and linebacker Chad Kalilimoku. Second team selections were wide receiver Blake Harano and defensive tackle Ronald Tauala.
BYUH tops Oakland City
Kerry Hendrickson scored 20 points, leading Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 98-76 season-opening victory over Oakland City (Ind.) last night at Laie.The Seasiders outrebounded the visitors, 52-27, grabbing 22 off the offensive boards to set up numerous second-chance baskets.
Baseball tickets renewal
The deadline to renew season tickets for the University of Hawaii baseball season is Friday. The renewal form was mailed Oct. 30. New season ticket sales begin Dec. 18. For more information, call 956-4482.
Softball recruits sign
University of Hawaii softball coach Bob Coolen has received commitments from four high school seniors to play for the Wahine in 2002.Committing during the early signing period are: Denise Dahlberg, a catcher-outfielder from Desert Vista High in Chandler, Ariz.; Tracie Uchima, an infielder-outfielder from Torrance (Calif.) High; Melissa Roberts, a pitcher-infielder from Henley High in South Australia, and Melissa Coogan, a pitcher-infielder from El Camino Real High in California.
