Maori John Rowles
is now entertaining
in Australia

Question: What ever happened to singer John Rowles?

Answer: Maori singer John Rowles, whose signature song "Cheryl Moana Marie" was a big hit in Hawaii in the early 1970s, is still a star in Sydney, according to promoter Kimo Wilder McVay.

Rowles was brought in by the promoter in 1971 to replace Don Ho at the Duke Kahanamoku nightclub in Waikiki, where he played for seven years, said McVay, who managed him for about four years. Rowles later went on to perform at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Monarch Room for five years.

In Sydney, Rowles sings in casinos, does concert tours and occasionally works in New Zealand, his homeland. He is also very popular in South Africa and other places throughout the world, McVay said.

For the last several months, McVay and promoter Yemun Chung have been working to bring Rowles back to Hawaii for a concert. Rowles wants to come back to perform in Hawaii, where he visits once a year, he said.

Rowles just released a new CD of romantic ballads entitled, "John Rowles, Voice of A Legend," McVay said.
