New world champion Sunny Garcia yesterday surfed to first place at Haleiwa's Alii Beach Park in the Hawaiian Pro, the first leg of the Triple Crown.
Fellow Hawaii surfer Bonga Perkins made it a sweep for the 50th state yesterday, winning the Bear Hawaiian Pro Longboard Invitational.
Three Hawaii surfers finished behind Garcia -- Kaipo Jaquias, Brian Pacheco and Kalani Robb -- in second through fourth place, while Lance Ho'okano finished second behind Perkins.
The Triple Crown of Surfing now moves along the North Shore of Oahu to Sunset Beach, which will host the men's Rip Curl Cup and the women's Quiksilver Roxy Pro, November 24 to December 7. The third and final stop of the Series is the 30th anniversary Mountain Dew Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters, at Pipeline, December 8-21.
Lee gains WAC honors
Hawaii's Crystal Lee, who averaged 21 points, 2.7 rebounds, three assists and 1.7 steals in three games, is the Western Athletic Conference women's basketball Player of the Week.Lee, a 5-foot-11 senior forward from Spokane, Wash., helped the Wahine to a 3-0 start and the Hawaiian Regent Hotel Classic championship.
She shot .533 (21-of-38) from the field and .739 (17-of-23) from the foul line. Lee tied her career high with 23 points in the upset win over Pepperdine Saturday.
Big Isle hoops coming up
The ninth annual Big Island Invitational Basketball Tournament opens Friday with four games at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.Long Beach State plays San Francisco at noon followed by No. 22 Oklahoma vs. Montana at 2:30.
Oregon State and Appalachian State meet at 5 p.m. with Tulane taking on the host University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans at 7:30.
Saturday's action begins at noon and the first game Sunday tips off at 8:30 a.m.
The daily ticket price is $35. Vulcan-only game tickets cost $5 for adults and $2 for students.

Shootout Saturday
Pearl Harbor Transmission-Fastest Street Car Shootout drag racing, featuring imports and domestic street-legal cars is Saturday at Hawaii Raceway Park.The gates open at 4 p.m. Qualifying starts at 5 p.m. with eliminations beginning at 8 p.m.
Gold Cup drags set
The final event for the 2000 Budweiser Gold Cup drag racing series is Dec. 9 during the NAPA South Pacific Championships at Hawaii Raceway Park.Angie Ilac holds a slim lead over Roy Nagamine in the pro gas division.
John Martos is ahead of James Barboza in the super ET division and Leonard Barboza enjoys a comfortable cushion over Dennis Martos in the super gas division.
Military hockey soon
Hockey teams from the Army and Navy will play a benefit game Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Ice Palace.Proceeds go to the Hawaiian Youth Hockey Association.
Tickets cost $3.50 in advance or $5 at the door. A family pass for four is available for $12.

Two preps to BYUH
Two California prep stars have signed letters of intent to play basketball for Brigham Young University-Hawaii next year.Shawn Broadnax, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, and Tyree Gardner, a 6-0 point guard, both play for San Leandro High School in the Bay Area.
Broadnax averaged 19 points per game as a junior and was named to the HAAL All-Conference Team. Gardner averaged 15 points a game.
Tae Kwon Do training
Arlene Limas, winner of a gold medal in tae kwon do at the 1988 Olympics, will be conducting two training sessions here next month.The seminars are Dec. 2 from 2 to 5 p.m. and Dec. 3 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Heeia Elementary School in Kaneohe.
The Saturday seminar is geared toward children 14-and-under. The Sunday seminar is for ages 15-and-up. The cost is $25.

Football Fever winner goes 10-0
Nobuo Uyehara has been playing the Honolulu Star-Bulletin/Hula Bowl Maui's Football Fever contest "for years.''"But I never went 10-0 before,'' said the retired Kaneohe resident.
Perfection paid off for Uyehara, whose 10-0 ballot was selected to win the $500 weekly prize. All entries that were 9-1 or 10-0 were eligible for the weekly drawing; all ballots are eligible for the grand prize.
The top Fever panelist this week was KINE's Frank B. Shaner, who went 9-1.
Only two weeks remain in this year's contest.
