Galloways free Western Kentucky refused to fold when trailing by 12 points with six minutes left in the game.
throws save Wahine
Senior captain gives UH
a cushion and the defense
staves off Lady ToppersBy Al Chase
Star-BulletinThe University of Hawaii returned the favor by not collapsing when three consecutive turnovers helped the Lady Toppers trim the UH lead to one point, 71-70, with 33 seconds left to play.
Senior captain Kylie Galloway calmly sank two free throws with 19 seconds remaining to provide the final margin of victory.
The Wahine then followed defensive instructions perfectly to preserve the 73-70 win in last night's championship game of the Hawaiian Regent Hotel Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hawaii head coach Vince Goo called his last time out after Galloway's free throws.
"There were a couple of things we didn't want to happen. We didn't want to foul and we didn't want them to get a 3-point shot off," Goo said. "Everybody played real good defense for 19 seconds, a long 19 seconds.
"Everyone has to play individual. If your girl doesn't have the ball you have to be right next to her ready to step up."The Wahine went to a full-court, contain press to slow the Lady Toppers' advance, making their stand just outside the 3-point arc.
Western Kentucky whipped the ball around, but a desperation shot by Camryn Whitaker from the right side was well off the mark.
"Western Kentucky is a tough team. They played us well. They played us smart. We were lucky to come out with the W," said Galloway, who led all scorers with 26 points and nine rebounds.
"We dug deep and it's good to have these kind of games early in the season because you know what to expect the next time around."
"I think being 3-0 now is really good for morale. It's a confidence booster starting the season out on a positive note," said tournament Most Valuable Player Crystal Lee.
She scored 19 points, had half of UH's four steals and took a couple of charging fouls, including a key one with 1:32 to play.
Hawaii began the game with a matchup zone defense, but had to switch to man-to-man 10 minutes into the game.
The reason: Western Kentucky started kicking the ball out to Jamie Truitt who converted four consecutive 3-pointers. The last one gave the the Lady Toppers their biggest lead, 26-21, 7:21 before intermission.
Two free throws by April Atuaia, a driving layup by Christa Brossman and buckets by Galloway and Lee erased the deficit.
The Wahine maintained a lead throughout the second half, but never pulled away as they did in the first two tournament games.
Natalie Powers' jumper cut the UH margin to four points, 49-45, with 11:37 left.
That's when the Wahine put together their one significant run, outscoring Western Kentucky, 15-7, over the next five minutes for the 12-point lead. Then it was gut check time the rest of the way.
"We made some mistakes, but it was kind of like a character building game down the stretch," Goo said. "After the three turnovers, we stayed in there.
"We had some younger people on the floor. They haven't been in this situation before. They were looking around for some leadership. Kylie gave them the leadership they needed."
"We just had to calm down," Galloway said.
Christen Roper also did a good job off the bench guarding Western Kentucky's All-American ShaRae Mansfield.
Roper scored eight points and collected eight rebounds.
Pepperdine 87, Northern Arizona 61: The Waves (2-1) blew the game open early in the second half. Nadja Morgan's 19 points led four Pepperdine players in double figures.
Lindsey Foster and Kara Kleinhenz each had 12 points for the Lumberjacks (0-3).
