Town meeting to
focus on educating
Kalihi children

Education issues facing children in Kalihi will be the topic of a town meeting called "Can Kalihi Kids Do Better?" It will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 28 at Kapalama School's cafeteria.

Panel members will include Paul LeMahieu, state schools superintendent; Hamilton McCubbin, chief operating officer of Kamehameha Schools; Randy Hitz, dean of the University of Hawaii College of Education; and Tom Barlow, vice president of Pacific Resources for Education and Learning.

Three other panels of educators, community leaders and elected officials will also attend.

They will discuss issues facing native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and immigrant populations in Kalihi and whether charter schools would be an answer to meeting the special needs of these groups.

Kalihi legislators and community leaders are organizing the event.

The public is invited to attend and ask questions.

Hirono travels: Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono has wrapped up a weeklong trip to Japan and the Philippines, representing Hawaii on state business that included tourism, captive insurance and construction.

Hirono went to Okinawa Nov. 10 to attend an exhibit, "From Bento to Mixed Plate: Americans of Japanese Ancestry in Multicultural Hawaii," commemorating the 100th anniversary of the arrival of Okinawans in Hawaii.

While on Okinawa, Hirono attended the Obuchi Okinawa Education and Research Inauguration party, a partnership between Okinawa and the East-West Center to facilitate an exchange between Japan and the United States.

Hirono traveled to Tokyo last Monday and met with officials in the international aviation ministry, the Japan Travel Bureau and Japan Airlines.

While in Tokyo, she also attended the Hawaii State Captive Insurance Conference Tuesday and Wednesday, and met with the vice governor of Tokyo, Yasushi Aoyama.

She then went to the Philippines, where she attended the Philconstruct Ninth Annual Philippine International Construction and Building Materials Exhibition Thursday in Manila.

Hirono returned to Hawaii Saturday.
