Maui’s ‘FirstLight’
screens likely
Oscar nominees

For film lovers who missed the chance for an early look at likely Academy Award nominees, Maui Film Festival founder Barry Rivers has a post Christmas present: The FirstLight 2000 Academy Screenings on Maui.

Through five days of screening -- Dec. 26 to 30 -- FirstLight will feature 16 films at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theatre, including the Cohen Brother's "O Brother Where Art Thou" starring George Clooney; "Shadow of the Vampire" with John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe; and "Pollock" with Ed Harris.

Here's the schedule:

Dec. 26

Bullet 5 p.m.: "Finding Forrester" (PG-13): Sean Connery plays a reclusive writer mentoring a young student/athlete.

Bullet 7:30 p.m.: "O Brother Where Art Thou" (PG-13): George Clooney stars in a story about three prison escapees' escapades in the 1930s rural South.

Dec. 27

Bullet 5 p.m.: "Quills" (R) Geoffrey Rush and Kate Winslet star in this exploration of the boundaries of creative and artistic expression.

Bullet 7:30 p.m.: "Billy Elliot," (R): A young mining-town boy is more interested in ballet than boxing .

Dec. 28

Bullet 2 p.m.: "The Grinch" (PG) Jim Carrey stars in this rendition of the classic Dr. Seuss tale.

Bullet 5 p.m.: "You Can Count on Me" (R): Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo star in this story of love and redemption.

Bullet 7:30 p.m.: "State and Main" (R): Alec Baldwin, Sara Jessica Parker and William Macy star in a comedy about a small town's reaction to a film production.

Bullet :30 p.m.: "Saving Grace" (R): A proper English widow gets horticulturally creative to save her estate.

Dec. 29

Bullet 2 p.m.: "The Claim," (R): Wes Bentley and Sarah Polley star in this western set at the time of the California Gold Rush.

Bullet 5 p.m.: "Before Night Falls" (R): Javier Bardem as Cuban poet/writer Reinaldo Arenas; with Johnny Depp.

Bullet 7:30 p.m.: "Chocolate" (PG-13) An English-language film set in France.

Bullet 9:30 p.m.: "Shadow of the Vampire" (R): John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe. A darkly comedic fictionalized story about the making of "Nosferatu."

Dec. 30

Bullet 11 a.m.: "Chicken Run" (G): Animated story of "fowl" play.

Bullet 2 p.m.: "Dancer in the Dark" (R): Starring Bjork as a factory worker who's going blind, and Catherine Deneuve.

Bullet 5 p.m.: "Pollock" (R): Ed Harris stars and directs a film about Expressionist pioneer Jackson Pollock.

Bullet 7:30 p.m.: "Malena," (Unrated): A story set in Sicily.

Bullet Tickets: $7 per film when using Maui Film Festival's "Take 5 Passport" (five admissions for $35); $10 a film when tickets are purchased individually. Tickets for any G-, PG- and PG-13-rated films are $5 for keiki under 17
