Hawaiian Regent ClassicBy Al Chase
Star-BulletinPutting some motion into their motion offense after the break, the Wahine won their season opener, 67-53, over Northern Arizona in the first round of the Hawaiian Regent Classic before 640 fans last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
"We told the players at halftime, the first 20 minutes was our exhibition season and that's it," UH head coach Vince Goo said.
"I thought NAU outplayed us for about 17 of those 20 minutes. I think we asserted ourselves a little better in the second half."
The Wahine were more aggressive on defense after the break, holding the Lumberjacks to 29 percent shooting from the floor. On offense, Hawaii moved out to the 3-point arc to stimulate the motion game.
"It made it easier and gave us more room to maneuver," said senior forward Crystal Lee, who scored 21 points.
Senior forward Kylie Galloway led UH with 27 points and 11 rebounds, but only after overcoming a slow start. She was 0-for-5 from the field in the first nine minutes.
"I was a little anxious. I'm not used to being the go-to player. I've had Raylene (Howard) and Nani (Cockett) on my team for balance. It's still a balance because we have Crystal and Dainora (Puida), but I'm not used to people looking to me so much to be a scoring threat," Galloway said.
"When I went into the locker room I said 'Oh my God, I suck right now.' So with the game on the line I just needed to do what I did."
She made her last two first-half, field goal attempts, then connected on all seven after intermission.
Lee complemented Galloway's accuracy by sinking 4-of-6 from the floor.
"Kylie and Crystal make good cuts. Other people got the ball to them. It's a five-person offense. It can happen either way. I thought our new people did a good job of hitting the open person," Goo said.
"We showed a lot more imagination on offense after halftime."
Junior Janka Gabrielova ran the offense for 28 minutes with mixed reviews. She admitted to being a little nervous, but had three assists to two turnovers.
"She's been getting better each week. She will start to understand what we want," Goo said. "It's different between a scrimmage and real ballgame. We need to coach her a little more from the bench about time management."
Gabrielova tried two long passes late in the game that didn't connect, when running time off the clock would have been more pleasing to the UH coaches.
At the center spot, Puida scored 10 points and had seven rebounds while Christen Roper had three rebounds and blocked three shots.
Freshman April Atuaia also collected seven rebounds.
Galloway credited her teammates' defense for her 11 boards.
"I was able to block out," she said. "It wasn't my jumping ability that brought the balls down. Let's get real here."
PEPPERDINE 88, WESTERN KENTUCKY 81:
Junior center Nadja Morgan led the Waves with 24 points. Damaris Hinojosa, 1999-2000 West Coast Conference freshman of the year, added 20."I was pleased by the way the kids played together since we're missing Rasheeda Clark (sprained ankle), arguably the best player on the West Coast," said Pepperdine head coach Mark Trakh.
The Waves dominated at both ends, outrebounding Western Kentucky, 30-15. Only a 19-7 Hilltopper run in the final five minutes kept the score respectable.
