The Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team kept its record perfect while previously undefeated Cal State Los Angeles fell at the NCAA Division II Pacific Regional yesterday.
The Sea Warriors (24-0) advanced to today's (5 p.m. HST) championship match with Cal State San Bernardino, thanks to a 15-13, 15-8, 16-14 semifinal victory over Cal State Bakersfield.
In the second semifinal, host and top-seeded Cal State L.A. (30-1) was upset by CS San Bernardino, 8-15, 16-14, 13-15, 15-13, 15-13.
"We didn't care who we saw,'' said Sea Warrior coach Tita Ahuna. "We're here to win.''
HPU was challenged in Game 3, falling behind, 14-11. The Sea Warriors held off one game point before rallying with five straight points to close out the match.
Susy Garbelotti had two of her match-high 18 kills during the comeback, including the game-winner, and added six blocks. Debbie Sant'Anna added 16 kills for HPU.
Today's winner advances to the Division II Elite Eight national tournament in two weeks.
Na Koa meeting Monday
University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones and Warriors offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh will be the featured speakers at the Na Koa Football Club meeting on Monday at the Stan Sheriff Center hospitality room.Jones and Cavanaugh will review the Louisiana Tech game and talk about the upcoming game with Wisconsin.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. with the meeting at noon. The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.
Agbayani at QB Club
Benny Agbayani, New York Mets outfielder and male Sportsperson of the Month for October, is the featured speaker at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Pagoda Hotel.Other speakers include Dave Shoji, head coach, University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team; George Lumpkin, assistant head UH football coach and wide receivers coach Ron Lee.
The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by the program.
Gardner qualifies in golf
Former Hawaii golfer Nicole Horner Gardner, who now lives in Mesa, Ariz., earned one of the 36 priority-1 spots for the 2001 SBC Futures Tour by shooting a 72-hole score of 299 in the tour's qualifying tournament yesterday in Lakeland, Fla.Summerset Lovett, also of Hawaii, missed qualifying by three strokes with a 306.
Rigg resigns at Punahou
Punahou is in no rush to choose a successor for boys volleyball coach Scott Rigg, who resigned Monday after leading the team to its seventh consecutive state championship."At this point, we want to savor the season," Punahou athletic director Tom Holden said. "We want to honor Scott for his accomplishments."
Rigg, who has coached the Buffanblu to the past four state titles, is scheduled to have back surgery next month, with the possibility of another surgery next year.
"I've been needing to get (the surgery) done for a while," Rigg said. "I don't think I'm going to have the kind of time to give to the program that it deserves."
Holden said it will probably be four or five weeks before the school starts the process of hiring a new coach.
A possibility for Rigg's successor is Lyman Lacro -- an assistant to Rigg the past four years and head coach from 1994-96.
"If Lyman's involved at all, the program is in good hands," said Rigg, who will continue teaching the fifth grade at Punahou.
UH swimmers win
The University of Hawaii men's and women's swim teams each won their third consecutive meet yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.The Rainbows defeated Cal State Northridge, 98-20, while the Wahine downed CSUN, 89-21.
Longboards underway
The world's elite longboarders battled it out in yesterday's first round of the $20,000 Bear Hawaiian Pro Longboard Invitational off Haleiwa.Dave Kalama from Maui posted some of the highest scores in winning his heat against Rusty Keaulana, Seb Wilson and George Fujisawa.
Advancing to the quarterfinals were Hawaii's Mikey Gordon, Rusty Keaulana, Duane DeSoto, Kapono Nahina, Lance Hookano, Bonga Perkins and Dino Miranda.
BYU wins in three
The Brigham Young men's volleyball team topped the University of Hawaii in an exhibition last night, 30-24, 30-24, 30-24 at War Memorial Gym in Wailuku.
Surf's up on the 'Net
The 18th annual Vans G-Shock Triple Crown of Surfing, currently being held on the North Shore, is broadcasting to 56 radio stations worldwide and the internet.The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Radio Network was established last year by Beau Hodge to help Randy Rarick, executive director of the Triple Crown of Surfing, to help promote and publicize the event locally and international.
"We are supplying daily live phone-in information to 25 radio stations island-wide," said Hodge. "Plus another 31 radio stations (world-wide) receive our coverage."
The network is able to capture interviews from the surfers at the contest site and produce reports that are fast moving and interesting to the radio listener. The digitally produced reports are sent via the Internet.
