Bicyclists must
obey laws, too

ACCORDING to a full-page ad in Tuesday's Star-Bulletin, this is Hawaii Bicycle Month. The page was full of safety tips for both motorists and bicyclists to protect bicycle riders. But nowhere did I see anything about bicyclists who use sidewalks. A bicyclist speeding on a sidewalk is a menace and can cause severe injury to pedestrians. I've had to avoid them often on sidewalks. Police Sgt. Robert Lung said the law does not allow bicyclists on business district sidewalks. Also, he said bicyclists must yield to pedestrians on sidewalks that the bikers can legally use. Another gripe I have is that some bicyclists use the wrong side of the road and come straight at my car. That was addressed in the ad ...

"Boots on the Beach" co-chairs Carole Brooks and Dicey Brinck are elated the Cancer Society benefit at Waialae Country Club tonight is a sellout. Kelvin Wong was a fun guy

Peace Wong was born on Armistice Day, thus the name Peace. She did not have a happy Nov. 11 birthday this year because she lost her husband, Kelvin Wong, 68, on Oct. 22. In World War II, Kelvin and Puna Titcomb shined shoes in front of a Hotel Street bar. I was across the street selling Star-Bulletins at the Army-Navy YMCA. Kelvin, Tasty foods owner, was a fun character. I'm sure glad he, Peace and I made a golfing trip to Pebble Beach several years ago ...
