YWCA
Reprinted copies of a 1941 Chinese cookbook
will be on sale for $11 at the YWCA centennial
celebration Saturday.
The event, from 3 to 6 p.m., will celebrate the Y's centennial year with music, martial arts demonstrations, crafts and the staging of a historic vignette about the first meeting to organize the Y.
The pool will be open for swimming, city prosecutor Peter Carlisle will host a basketball contest, hula teacher Julia Schutt will give lessons, and Kelly Heldt of Koolau Plantations will cook using a recipe from the YWCA Chinese Cookbook published in 1941. The cookbook has been reprinted and copies will be available for sale at $11.
For the kids, there will be face painting and Play-doh sessions.
Participants with an artistic streak can paint a pot in the Toshiko Takaezu Ceramics Studio and have it fired. There will be a small fee for the pot, but studio fees will be waived.
In between activities you can enjoy food and beer from Cafe Laniakea.
The YWCA provides various programs and services, including housing and support for women in transition, child care, job training, swimming lessons, health and fitness and recreation and camping activities.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for children under 10, and free for children under 2. They are available at YWCA locations: Laniakea, Fernhurst and Kokokahi or by phone at 538-7061, ext. 0; information, ext. 234.
The Laniakea Center is at 1040 Richards St.
The 4th annual Protea Wreath-Makers Festival takes place this weekend at Windward Mall. Wrap holidays with protea
Shop for protea bouquets and baskets, summer-dried protea, floral arrangements, wreaths and crafts from two growers, Ka Lea Na Pua and Noelani Farms.
There also will be demonstrations on the care of protea. The beauty of this plant is that protea is one of the few tropical flowers that lends itself to dried art, retaining its shape and color for years, and certainly throughout the holiday season.
The festival will be on the upper level theater wing, across from Craft Supply of Honolulu. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to noon Sunday.
