Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Costner returns to Hawaii early next year to star in Universal Pictures/Spyglass Entertainment's $75-million supernatural thriller "Dragonfly." Costners Dragonfly
set to film on Kauai
By Tim Ryan
Star-BulletinThe production, scheduled to be filmed on Kauai for two weeks in January, will be directed by Tom Shadyac, who also did "Patch Adams," "The Nutty Professor," "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" and "Liar Liar."
"Dragonfly" also will star Academy Award-winning actor Kathy Bates as Costner's neighbor. Also appearing will be Mischa Barton, Susanna Thompson and Robert Baily.
In "Dragonfly," a sort of "Field of Dreams" meets "The Sixth Sense," Costner portrays a grieving physician who believes he's being contacted by the spirit of his ex-wife through the near-death experiences of his patients.
Kauai will double for Venezuela, with lots of footage of the island's waterfalls. Filming will also be done in Chicago.
It's the second sawbones part in a year for Costner, who portrays a disaster-relief physician in the upcoming Oliver Stone film "Beyond Borders." This will also mark the second time Costner has filmed in Hawaii. He starred in Universal's $175 million "Waterworld," filmed on the Big Island in 1995. The production spent about $35 million in the state.
Production preparation work, including obtaining the necessary location filming permits, is under way on the Garden Island.
Costner's involvement in another Universal film is interesting considering the public feud he had with the studio over the baseball picture "For Love of the Game," when the actor charged that Universal's meddling in the film's editing doomed its chance of success.
