Star-BulletinThe medical examiner's office identified the boys who were killed as Albert Torres, 17, and Reginald Castillo, 16, of Ewa Beach. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Torres was a senior at Campbell High School, while Castillo, a former Campbell student, was enrolled in a special program school in Ewa.
The 11:40 p.m. collision also left a 5-year-old boy in critical condition and three others -- an Ewa Beach boy, 16; a Kaneohe man, 24, and a Waipahu woman, 22 -- in guarded condition at Queen's Medical Center.
Speed and possibly alcohol appear to have been contributing factors, police investigators said.
Torres, driving a 1996 Acura Integra, was southbound when he lost control of the vehicle, police said.
The Integra crossed the center line and was broadsided by an oncoming 1999 Hyundai Elantra, driven by the Kaneohe man.
The accident was the second fatal crash in the area this year and the fifth since December 1995.
