Advertiser to retireBy Rick Daysog
Star-BulletinJim Gatti, editor of the 107,500-circulation Advertiser for nearly five years, told staffers yesterday that he is retiring for family reasons.
Gatti, 57, will be succeeded by Saundra Keyes, managing editor of the Contra Costa Times, a 200,000-circulation daily in Walnut Creek, Calif.
Keyes (pronounced Kize) also has served as managing editor of The Miami Herald (1993-1996) and executive editor of the Long Beach Press-Telegram (1991-1993).
Keyes will begin her new duties Dec. 1.
Prior to joining the Advertiser, Gatti spent 26 years with the Detroit News, which is owned by the Advertiser's parent Gannett Co. Gatti, a native of Michigan, said he and his wife made the decision in July to return to Detroit to be with family.
"Jim has guided the Advertiser through some difficult times and the Advertiser is a much better newspaper today because of his leadership," Mike Fisch, the Advertiser president and publisher, said in a memo to staffers.
"His steady hand and strong leadership will be missed."
