FOOTBALL: The final two meaningful games before the state tournament -- the third-place game and title game in the Oahu Interscholastic Association -- will determine the matchups in the eight-team field. The OIA tournament third-place game between Castle and Kaimuki is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Kaiser Stadium (after the JV championship game between Kahuku and McKinley). The Castle-Kaimuki loser plays defending champion St. Louis in the first round of states. The OIA championship game between Kahuku and Waianae is Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. The state tournament begins Nov. 17. THE BIG GAMES
Waianae and Kahuku
meet for OIA titleVOLLEYBALL: The quarterfinals of the state tournament are tomorrow, with the first match of the day at 10 a.m. The semifinals and championship matches are Friday -- with the boys' title game at 6:35 p.m. and the girls' game at 8 p.m. Games both days are at the Stan Sheriff Center.
CROSS COUNTRY: The state cross-country championships are Saturday at the Hawaii Prep Academy on the Big Island. The girls' race begins at 9 a.m. and the boys start at 9:45 a.m. The Kamehameha boys and Punahou girls are defending state champions. Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls' champion Christal Cuadra (Maryknoll) and Annie Kawasaki (St. Francis) are considered serious contenders for the individual title -- but will not be able to help their team win a state crown. Both girls run for Pac-Five, which cannot compete for team championships on the state level because it draws athletes from several schools.
BOWLING: The state tournament -- sponsored by Sam Choy -- runs tomorrow and Friday at the Kona Bowl on the Big Island. The Aiea boys and Hilo girls are defending champions. Schedules for today's and tomorrow's events are in Calendar on Page E-6.
