Carol Gabbard, whose campaign against homosexual lifestyles increased in intensity over the weekend, defeated incumbent Garrett Toguchi for the last of three seats in the Board of Education’s Oahu at-large race.

The third-place slot in the at-large seats was the one to watch in a race known for an electorate that casts its vote for candidates whose names they recognize.

Toguchi, who trailed Gabbard in the primary election by 5,200 votes, lost this time by more than 5,000 votes.

Two other incumbents lost. Second-time candidate Marilyn Harris defeated Ronald Nakano for the Leeward seat. Current board Chairman Mitsugi Nakashima lost to Kauai Family Court Director Sherwood Hara.

As expected, former tire dealer Lex Brodie with former Senate Ways and Means Chairwoman Donna Ikeda following closely on his heels dominated first and second place in the Oahu at-large race.
