State Sen. Brian Kanno, under fire for his vote against the confirmation of former Attorney General Margery Bronster, fell behind Republican challenger Hank Makini tonight but wound up winning in a 79-vote margin.

Makini held lead over Kanno in the 20th Senate District (Ewa Beach, Makakilo) all night until the final printout.

Republicans Bob Hogue and Fred Hemmings won in Windward Oahu Senate races.

There will be four Republican members of the state Senate.

Meanwhile, several incumbent House members lost:

» Republican Ron Davis defeated Rep. Sol P. Kaho'ohalahala in the 7th House District (Lahaina, Molokai, Lanai) by about 500 votes.

» Republican Mindy Jaffe received a little more than a 100 votes more than Rep. Brian Y. Yamane in the 19th House District (Diamond Head, Kaimuki, Waikiki).

» Republican Charles Kong Djou defeated Rep. Iris Ikeda Catalani in the 47th House District (Kahaluu-Kaneohe) by about 600 votes.

» Joe Gomes recorded more than 300 votes more than Rep. Kenny Goodenow in the 51st House District (Waimanalo-Enchanted Lake).

Republican candidates were strong in the following House races:

» William Stonebraker beat Democrat Greg Knudsen in the the 15th House District (Kalama Valley, Hawaii Kai, Portlock) by almost 700 votes.

» Guy P. Ontai received 1,400 votes more than Democrat Charlotte L. Nekota in the 39th House District (Wheeler, Mililani).
