Special to the Star-BulletinThe No. 4-seeded Tigers of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division got a monstrous treat last night in advancing to the volleyball tournament final by defeating Radford, 14-16, 15-5, 15-12, at the Blaisdell Arena.
Senior outside hitter Cherie Mattoon kicked it up a notch in the second and third games for the Tigers (9-4) with a total of 14 kills. The team's six blocks and nine aces were also a factor in turning back a last-ditch effort by Radford (8-4) during the third game.
Meaghan Rivera, a senior outside hitter for the Rams, led her team in a valiant effort with six kills.
But the action didn't stop there. Volleyball fans were in for a second thriller as a spirited Waianae team fell to Moanalua, 15-9, 16-14.
Natasha Tacgere, a junior middle blocker, had seven kills without an error to lead the Seariders.
However, Moanalua senior outside hitter Kahala Kabalis stepped up to the challenge. Her 10 kills and seven digs helped pull the Menehunes from the edge of defeat in the second game. Moanalua endured three game points before coming back to win.
Sophomore Amy Kotani also turned in a gritty performance for the Menehunes. The 5-foot-2 defensive specialist had eight digs.
