The Hawaii State Boxing Commission officially voted yesterday to shoot down a five-bout card scheduled for Saturday in Waikiki and sponsored by Hawaii Pro Boxing Inc. Five-bout card
officially voted downBy Pat Bigold
Star-BulletinThe card originally was promoted with former world champion Meldrick Taylor as the headliner. But Taylor was pulled when the commission required a neurological exam and CAT scan due to reports about the 34-year-old fighter's condition.
Former heavyweight contender Obed Sullivan was to headline the final card, which underwent several revisions.
Commission executive officer Mike Machado said the action was ultimately taken because promoter Ed Presley missed his third deadline to post a deposit for prize purse and officials' fees. Machado said that by law a promoter must bring the deposit to the commission four days before a show.
He said Presley was supposed to deliver the deposit on Friday for the card which was originally scheduled for Halloween at the Sheraton Waikiki.
The commission offered Presley an extension to Monday. But when Presley failed to bring the deposit , the commission postponed the show.
Machado said that after Presley requested and received permission to reschedule the card for Saturday, the promoter agreed to deliver the deposit Tuesday. He did not.
Presley, who indicated he would try to stage a card on Nov. 28, said he told the commission he would withdraw the weekend card before the commission voted.
