Sweet news for
dentist Chong

WITH all the candy handed out to trick-or-treaters Halloween night, you just know that dentists statewide are going to be in for a windfall business. But just in case, Dr. Carolyn Chong of Hilo, who recently was graduated from the University of California at San Francisco School of Dentistry, came up with the perfect way of sharing the news of her graduation with family and friends. She handed out "Good News" candy bars filled with caramel, nuts and chocolate. Yes, it was good news, to be sure, but it might also be construed to be a dentist with foresight about to build up a future practice ...

AVOIDING long lines on election day, I voted early at City Hall, thus negating any last minute persuasion to change my vote in any race. Having filled out the ballots, I proceeded to the new multimillion dollar vote counting machines our tax dollars have paid for, and following the instructions from a precinct worker, inserted the filled-out ballot. The machine refused to accept it. Following the worker's instruction, I tried the other end, and again it didn't work. It wasn't until it was turned over that the thing finally worked. "It makes us look bad," said the worker. Whose idea was it to get those machines anyway? ...

LOOK for Mrs. America, Hawaii's own Leslie Lam, to be wrapping herself in the flag if she makes it to the Miss World contest Dec. 15. Her chances would appear to be good, and her sister, Cherie Leong, visited Mary Phillips of Flags Flying in Ward Warehouse to ask about appropriate flag wear. Besides banners and flags, they also have Old Glory on T-shirts, tank tops, jackets, shorts, jeans, caps and even swimsuits. Ball gowns? ...

It likes to bill itself as the official automobile of the Heisman Trophy Award, but it may also be the official automobile of the Statehood Recognition Committee. Suzuki recently ran a full page ad in Sports Illustrated that had an attached mail-in ballot for the Heisman sweepstakes. What's wrong with that? The contest was limited to legal residents of the Continental United States. But they'll sell cars here, right? ...

Mug shotA NEW interview show premieres Saturday on KGMB. Hosted by Kim Gennaula, it's called "Eye on People," and the people in her eye this week are state Prosecutor Peter Carlisle and former state Attorney General Margery Bronster ... One of the four people joining McKinley High School's Hall of Honor this month will be former Star-Bulletin writer Tomi Knaefler ... Many members of Eddie Kamae's old Sons of Hawaii group are no longer with us, but you can revisit them performing on film with Kamae's new documentary, appearing at this year's Hawaii Film Festival. Check the program for show times ...

Cirque de la Mode

IT'LL be a fashion circus at Saturday's French Festival Fashion Ball at the Hawaiian Village. Among those modeling haute couture for Christian Dior on the fashion runway will be Ann Simpson, mother-in-law of Sigourney Weaver and best friend and luncheon mate of Marie Lord. Among the French champagne and cuisine prepared by guest chefs, the Honolulu Symphony will play and members of the wonderful Cirque Eloize will perform. Haute couture from various fashion houses will be modeled on the shared runway, something rarely done. Tie Noir. French cuffs okay ...
