Boxing card KOed The pro boxing card headlined by former heavyweight contender Obed Sullivan and organized by Hawaii Pro Boxing Inc. is off, according to the Hawaii State Boxing Commission.
State did not receive deposit
from promoter of proposed bouts
at Sheraton WaikikiBy Pat Bigold
Star-BulletinExecutive officer Mike Machado said the commission, which meets this afternoon, will vote not to approve the five-bout card because the promoter failed to bring in the required purse and officials' fees deposit.
The commission denied promoter Ed Presley permission to hold the card last night, as he originally requested, because he did not make the required $10,000 deposit.
But Presley, who wanted to reschedule for Saturday at the Sheraton Waikiki, was supposed to deliver the deposit to Machado's office by 4:30 p.m. yesterday.
Machado extended the deadline to 6 p.m. but Presley still did not show up and the executive officer said, "That's that."
Machado said deputy attorney general James Paige advised the commission.
But Presley said last night he thought that when the commission said it wanted the deposit four days before the show, it meant he could bring the money in by today.
"We are working to make this bout happen," said Presley.
"I was running around all day trying to work things out. I called Machado's office but we didn't get a call back from him. If they don't approve this card it will be another strike against boxing here."
