Star-Bulletin staff

The 18th annual Vans G-Shock Triple Crown of Surfing officially gets under way this week with the Billabong Girls at Honolua Bay, Maui. The waiting period started yesterday.

Other events in the Triple Crown are: the G-Shock Hawaiian Pro for men and women at Haleiwa's Alii Beach Park Nov. 12-22; the Rip Curl World Cup of Surfing men's event and the Quiksilver Roxy Pro women's event at Sunset Beach Nov. 24-Dec. 7; and the Mountain Dew Gerry Lopez Pipe Masters men's event Dec. 8-21 at Pipeline.

Hawaii's Sunny Garcia, the defending men's Triple Crown of Surfing champion - and now world champion after 15 years of trying - is back home for the three men's events.

Two-time defending world champion Layne Beachley of Australia is on track for her third women's world title.

Lady Sea Warriors No. 1

The unbeaten Hawaii Pacific University women's volleyball is ranked No. 1 for the 10th consecutive week in the AVCA Division II Coaches poll released yesterday.

The Lady Sea Warriors, on a school-record 19-match winning streak, received 24 of 25 first-place votes from the coaches. Cal State Los Angeles (26-0) got the other first-place vote and was tied with West Texas A&M (29-1) for the runner-up spot.

BYU-Hawaii (14-5) dropped one notch to eighth in this week's poll.

Pac-West academic stars

Six volleyball players from the four Hawaii teams in the Pacific West Conference were named to the PacWest All-Academic Team yesterday.

They are Vanessa Valansi and Ave Matsuzaki of BYU-Hawaii, Audrey Brady of Chaminade, Ann Haggerty of Hawaii-Hilo and Debbie Sant'Anna and Kristi Lezchuk of Hawaii Pacific.

Isle women win tennis title

A women's team from Honolulu won the USA League Tennis 3.5 Senior National championship last weekend at San Diego.

The Hawaii women beat Omaha, Neb., 3-0, in Sunday's title showdown.

Members of the winning team are captain Pat Head, Karen Denison, Karen Hamada, Audrey Yamamoto, Aileen Yoshida, Janet Ogawa and Evelyne Messer of Honolulu, Naomi Hill and Cherlyn Shioi of Aiea and Dee Spock of Pearl City.

Ekolu sectionals on Maui

The Ekolu League Sectional 6.0 Championships will be held Friday through Sunday at the Kapalua Village Tennis Center and Tennis Gardens on Maui.

Also on Saturday, Gamma Racquet Sports is sponsoring a free clinic for juniors and adults from 8- 9:30 a.m.

Bryan will hold another clinic for juniors Sunday from 8:30- 10:30 a.m. and Prince will host a clinic for anyone from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Fever winner goes 9-1

Perseverance pays off.

Richard and Norma Tokushima enter the Star-Bulletin's Football Fever contest every week with varying results.

Sometimes they do well, other times "not so good,'' said Norma Tokushima. "But we have fun.''

The Pearl City couple also has $500 this week, courtesy of Richard's 9-1 entry last week. His only incorrect guess was choosing the New York Jets over Buffalo.

The best the Football Fever panel could muster were 7-3 records by KINE's Frank B. Shaner and Dan Meisenzahl of KITV.

Entry forms are available every Monday and Tuesday in the Star-Bulletin.

All entries are eligible for the grand prize drawing.
