Star-BulletinA Honolulu native, she is remembered for chairing the state Board of Nursing in the early 1980s. Always popular, she was known by nicknames "Fritzi," "Shimi" and "Lehua."
Active in Nuuanu Congregational Church, she served on the National Board of Local Church Ministries and was known for her Camp Fire activities.
She was named Gerontological Nurse of the Year in 1991 by the Hawaii Nurses' Association and Nurse Educator of the Year for years 1989-1991.
She received her registered nurse degree from Queen's Medical Center and earned a master's in public health from the University of Minnesota. She received a doctorate from Columbia Pacific University in 1984.
Additionally, she held board memberships with Waikiki Health Center, Kalihi Palama Walk-In Clinic, Children's Center and the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ.
Her affiliations also included service as a recent corporate member of the United Church Board of Homeland Ministries.
She served as Chair-Council of Gerontological Nurses and as a member of the executive committee with the Center on Aging at the University of Hawaii.
She provided multiple consultations in Micronesia and other islands in the Pacific. She also wrote numerous articles for various publications.
She is survived by husband Bernard; daughter Claire S. Richardson of Tucson, Ariz.; brothers Robert and Mitsuo Shimoda; sister Nancy Hasegawa; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Nuuanu Congregational Church. Call after 3 p.m. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery.
