The Army isn't the only service seeking a "transformation."
The Marine Corps also is looking for a uniform that would set it apart from the other forces, which now all wear the black-and-green camouflage battle dress outfit.
Using the Internet, the Marine Corps collected data on two possible changes -- the first being a totally new design and the other, modifications to the current uniform.
Initial reports indicate Marines liked the current fatigues, but with modifications, such as replacing buttons with hook-and-latch fasteners, and reinforcing stress areas such as elbows, knees and seats.
A wear test will follow. A new uniform may be available as early as next fall.
In the Army, Chief of Staff Gen. Eric Shinseki ordered that Army soldiers be issued black berets, symbolizing the Army's transformation to a lighter and more deployable force, beginning in June.
The Air Force's Pacific command has a new staff to help it move from peacetime duties to orchestrating the air portion of any crisis ranging from humanitarian operations to war.
The 176-member unit, the 502nd Air Operations Group, is commanded by Col. Edward Groeninger.
The 502nd AOG consists of existing units at Hickam Air Force Base, along with 88 personnel transferred from units at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam.
Included in the makeup of the new Hickam unit are logistic and weather experts and pilots.
The 502nd AOG can trace its lineage to the 502nd Tactical Control Group, which was activated on Aug. 10, 1945. During the Korean War, it was the Air Force's only tactical control group and remained on the Korean peninsula until it was retired on Oct. 1, 1957.
