Art
Philip Markwart
Kapa designs are made with bamboo stamps.

Exhibit displays rare
kapa stamps

A rare display of more than 150 hand-carved bamboo stamps is at Native Books & Beautiful Things, Ward Warehouse, through Nov. 11.

The stamps, 'ohe kapala, represent a portion of artist and fabric designer Philip Markwart's collection devoted to this Hawaiian craft. The bamboo is carved with patterns inspired by native plants, then inked and pressed to kapa, or Hawaiian bark cloth, to form patterns.

The carving and stamping process will be described in a display. Markwart will be in the store 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Nov. 7 to demonstrate 'ohe kapala carving and designing.

For more information, call Native Books at 596-8885.
